The Tree of Life is a mystical explanation of how the universe came to existence. The Cabbala teaches that creation was accomplished through a series of divine emanations in which God, the unmanifest, wished to behold himself, and so overflowed into manifestation, creating the first sphere of existence known as Kether, or the Crown. When this sphere was complete, the divine power overflowed again and created the next sphere down, known as Hokmah, or Wisdom, and so on until ten spheres, or sephiroth, were created. The Tree, with its roots in the earth and the tips of its branches in the heavens provides a spiritual ladder by which God can read man and man can reach God.
